Broxtowe Borough Council proposes Greasley Parish Council be dissolved.

Moorgreen_Res

Broxtowe Borough Council is conducting a Community Governance Review (CGR) to evaluate and potentially modify the governance of all parishes within its jurisdiction.

On May 23, 2024, the council voted for Option 1: dissolving Greasley and transferring its area to Eastwood Town and Kimberley Town. Watnall would join Kimberley Town, Larkfields would join Nuthall Parish, and most of the remaining area would join Eastwood.

This means the end of Greasley and of this Parish Council.

This change is proposal is being imposed upon Greasley without consent or approval of its residents or councillors.

In response to the initial consultation, Greasley Parish Council held a public open evening to make our residents aware of the review. The majority of residents favoured keeping the current parish arrangements with minor boundary adjustments. These adjustments were proposed in a letter sent to Broxtowe Borough Council on 11th March, 2024.

Despite this, the Governance and Standards (GAS) Committee recommended dissolution, and Broxtowe Borough Council approved moving forward with this proposal. If implemented, Greasley Parish will be split, with most of its area joining Eastwood and Kimberley.

Greasley Parish Council exists to represent your views and priorities with Borough, County and higher government tiers. Should Greasley be dissolved, so will your most direct link to these tiers. Our staff, volunteers and Councillors work tirelessly to be your voice and to ensure that it gets heard. Instead, your views will be represented by larger Town Councils with a much greater population to represent.

We urge you to add your feedback to the consultation and help preserve your community. Every comment, no matter how long or short, helps to influence Broxtowe Borough Council’s decision.

The Country Of our Hearts

This Parish Council strongly believes that splitting semi-rural Greasley between suburban Eastwood and Kimberley would negatively impact the services provided to residents.

The Parish Council currently manages two parks, 36 allotments, and the Greasley Sports and Community Centre, which provides vital fitness, well-being and community services to a vast number of parish residents and to our neighbouring communities. Additionally, we maintain a children’s play park, trim trail, over 100 trees, and a stretch of Beauvale Brook.

The Greasley Sports and Community Centre also hosts a Parish Hall and Committee Room used by many varied community groups and healthcare providers. These include social groups for the elderly, sports clubs for children, the blood bank, a breast cancer screening unit and the Broxtowe GP Referrals scheme. The Centre also has a comprehensive class timetable to suit every ability. These services significantly benefit residents from in and around Greasley and are particularly valuable, especially after the recent closure of the Kimberley Leisure Centre.

Alongside it’s vast array of ‘daily’ services, the parish council organizes numerous free family events, including the Christmas Cracker, Greasley Gathering, Warm/Social Hub, and more. We also give out grants to community good causes, as well as supporting groups and clubs outside of our area which are inclusive of our residents.

Greasley Parish is characterized by its distinct identity and significant green belt areas, which the parish council is committed to protecting from development. We are pledged to defend our green space to the very best of our ability. In the past, parts of the greenbelt have been earmarked for possible development and this Parish Council will continue to fight against any further developments for as long as it can.

Should these plans go ahead, all of these services will become the responsibility of Eastwood or Kimberley Town Councils. If they are unable or unwilling to maintain them, they will be given over to Broxtowe Borough Council or discontinued.
