The Dovecote Recreation Ground is buzzing with activity as Greasley Parish Council continues its efforts to support local wildlife and create a welcoming space for residents.

Three new bird boxes have been installed on the park’s weeping ash tree, which underwent essential maintenance works earlier this week. Over the next few days, this number will grow to ten, providing a cosy habitat for birds and helping to support declining populations.

Bird conservation has never been more important. This year’s Big Garden Birdwatch saw over 600,000 participants across the UK counting an impressive 9.7 million birds. House Sparrows topped the list, but their numbers have plummeted by 60% since the first Birdwatch in 1979. Alarmingly, the UK has lost 38 million birds from its skies over the past 60 years. Initiatives like installing bird boxes and participating in the Birdwatch are vital steps in reversing this trend.

Find out how you can help at RSPB’s website.

The new bird boxes were installed by GPC staff alongside a local arborist team, who also donated wood chippings from the ash tree’s maintenance works to Greasley Beauvale Primary School. The chippings will enhance the school’s garden area, giving the branches a new lease of life in supporting outdoor education for children.

But the improvements don’t stop there. To brighten the recreation ground, 100 spring bulbs will soon be planted, thanks to a generous donation from a local resident. These will join the bulbs already sprouting around tree bases and along the driveway edge, bringing vibrant colour and a promise of spring to the park.

Greasley Parish Council remains committed to making Dovecote Recreation Ground a thriving space for both wildlife and visitors. Keep an eye out for even more enhancements in the coming weeks!
